    ORIENTALISM and the Visual Culture

    Tracing the itinerary of a transcultural past

    Overview

    The exhibition and symposium ORIENTALISM and the Visual Culture is a collaborative project of 12.0 Contemporary Islamabad, Center for Culture and Development Islamabad and Konstfack, University College for Art, Craft and Design Sweden.

    The project is a part of critical and theoretical engagement to discuss the image production in colonial past. Scholars and researchers from Sweden and Pakistan have been invited to revisit and reexamine visual material and cultural histories of Indo-Persian region.  Exhibition aims to initiate a dialogue to formulate the strategies to analyze and exchange ideas about developing an alternative language of discourse. The project highlights the similarities and interconnectedness of historical and cultural memory of the Indo-Persian region. Behzad Khosravi Noori, artist, researcher and scholar from Konstfack, Stockholm present his research project that includes the archive material between 1960 to 1970 from the images of working class immigrant and neighborhood in South West of Tehran. Artists Shahid Mirza from LSE Lahore and Ahmed Ali Manghanhar from Lahore showcase their artwork to create a dialogue around the same theme. The works of both the artists includes the photography as a subject and source material, with application of various painting and mixed media techniques as well as camera obscura.
